Botox® in Dearborn, MI

Botox® is a versatile injectable treatment that can treat a variety of problems, including cosmetic issues such as fine lines and wrinkles, and conditions such as TMJ Disorder that cause significant pain. At Advanced Smile, Dr. Blazo and his team are fully trained in administering Botox injections for both cosmetic and pain-relieving issues.

What is Botox®?

Botox is the brand name for a protein-based neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. When Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks the neurotransmitter that signals the muscle to contract. By preventing muscle movement, repeated clenching of a muscle can help prevent or minimize TMJ pain. Injected into different muscles, it targets specific muscles, preventing them from contracting and thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles while still allowing for expressive movements, such as smiling and raising your eyebrows. Understanding the complexity of how muscles work and which ones to target is at the heart of successfully using Botox for both cosmetic and medical treatments.

Where can you put Botox®?

It depends on what you want to achieve. Each muscle in the face and jaw serves a different purpose and must be treated accordingly. There is a wide range of muscles where Botox can be injected for cosmetic purposes. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look. Botox temporarily relaxes these muscles, softening the appearance of frown lines, crow’s feet, and lip lines (sometimes called smoker’s lines). It can also provide a subtle lift to the eyebrows, visually opening up the eyes.

Facial Botox® Injection Locations

  • The forehead, to smooth horizontal lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Eyebrows, to lift them
  • Bridge of the nose to minimize “bunny lines”
  • Outer corners of the eyes to eliminate crow’s feet
  • Around the lips to smooth wrinkles and plump lips

Botox® for TMJ Disorder

If you have tried other treatments for TMJ disorder and did not find relief, Botox may help.

Treating TMJ Disorder or teeth grinding with Botox® involves injection of the botulinum toxin into specific muscle groups, but the goal is different than cosmetic treatments. We are targeting the muscle groups in the jaw to relieve tension, relax the muscles, and reduce or eliminate pain caused by the constant clenching of muscles that puts excess strain on the temporomandibular joint.

By reducing the muscles’ ability to contract, we reduce their hyperactivity and the accompanying pain. This breaks the vicious cycle that leads to chronic pain, reducing strain on the jaw muscles and the temporomandibular joint. Treatment involving the TMJ requires extreme precision and accuracy.

Reducing a muscle’s ability to contract reduces its hyperactivity. After an injection, your jaw and face muscles can’t overwork themselves anymore, which helps break the chronic pain cycle and prevent additional strain on your jaw. Once injected, you should begin to feel the results within a week. For most patients, the results last three to four months before another treatment is required.

Our Process

We ask that you take a few precautions before your Botox® treatment to ensure the best results and your safety:

  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil, for at least seven days before treatment. This reduces any bruising that may result from the injections.
  • Skip alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your appointment for the same reason

On the day of treatment, your entire session will last only about 30 minutes. Your dentist will make the injections just under the skin, directly into the targeted muscles. An injection feels like a small pin prick or a bee sting. You may experience mild redness at the injection site for a few hours after treatment, but this typically fades quickly

After your Botox treatment, you may experience temporary swelling or redness at the injection sites, but these symptoms typically subside within a few minutes. Although most patients do not experience any side effects, there is always the possibility of a headache or muscle soreness

You will begin to feel and see the results of Botox treatment within a few days, with peak results typically occurring within one week. Your results should last between three and four months.
